In the frame of the CARG Project, the interpretation of several seismic reflection profiles has provided new important constraints aimed at clarify the deep structural setting of the Central-Western Sicily and the related offshore fold and thrust belt. It has already been envisaged as a tectonic pile mainly made up of deep water Meso-Cenozoic carbonate units overriding a thick stack of Meso-Cenozoic carbonate platform units, detached from their crystalline basement. The present note is to describe the morphogenetic processes and the relative landforms that were recognized in the area represented by the 1: 25,000 scale IGMI topographic map named Tavoletta Menfi (Serie 25/V F. 266 IV NO). The geomorphological map was realized by using the classic methodology based on direct geological and geomorphological field surveys, integrating the acquired data with the analysis of 1:18,000 scale aerial photos taken in 1997. From the geological point of view the examined area is characterized by the outcropping of carbonate and terrigenous sediments. Marsala area, in the western end of Sicily, has been historically interested by quarry activities, both at surface and underground. The carved rocks are Lower Pleistocene calcarenites, defined as “Calcarenite di Marsala” and referred to the Marsala syntheme. These calcarenites are composed of three main lithofacies with vertical and lateral passages: a)coarse to fine yellow bio- and lithoclastic calcarenites, rich in macrofossils; b) sands; and c) gray sandy clays. In the 2006 vintage was followed the evolution of total anthocyanis and total flavonoids of skins as well as of monomer catechins, dimer procyanidins and total flavonoids of seeds of Nero d’Avola, Syrah, Merlot and Cabernet sauvignon berries, in environments of average hill of western Sicily, warm - arid during the maturation period (from 18 to 21 August the temperatures overcome 40 °C). The situation of stress, caused by the high temperatures registered in the above period, even if negatively influenced the synthesis of the anthocyanis, did not induce important variations in the profiles of these molecules that remained quite invariant especially in Nero d’Avola and Syrah.
